Expert 1993 Mazda MX-3 review

our expert's take
Our expert's take

our expert's take

We’ll buy the “roses are red, violets are blue” routine, but a raspberry-colored Mazda?

For 1993 Mazda came up with a limited-edition subcompact MX-3 SE, a car thesize of the Ford Escort, with a 1.8-liter, 24-valve, 130-horsepower V-6 under the hood that is teamed with a five-speed manual transmission. Then Mazda painted the package purple, er, make that raspberry metallic.

With the 130-horsepower V-6, the MX-3 shouts when it wants to, but it doesn’t scream, as evidenced by the mileage rating of 23 m.p.g. city/28 highway.

Four-wheel independent suspension, power steering and 15-inch high-performance radial tires contribute to above-average ride and handling.

Two drawbacks: no air bags and no anti-lock brakes.

Base price: $16,455. Optional air conditioning runs a hefty $830.

I hate Mazda?s

I noticed this article states that there a zero recalls for the 1993 Mazda MX-3. I want to state that is false. I am 100% positive. The passenger seatbelts were recalled a couple of years after my son died because the seatbelt didn?t work. I believe an airbag was also recalled and possibly the drivers seatbelt.

The most reliable brand that I've ever owned.

I have had 3rd gear out in this transmission for over 100,000 and have had no trouble with the clutch due to this problem. The car now has 237,000 miles on it and gets 425-450 miles to a tank. The car sat parked as my extra car for seven years and then fired the first time when I went to start it. As a single mom, whose not a mechanic this is the kind of car you want to own.
