great little truck
redhot and fun, we are really enjoying it. Great mpg compared to our former suv. We actually have two Rangers, the above mentioed and a 1992, my hubby drives "whitie" most of the time, with fuel prices he loves getting 24+ mpg

Disappointing FX4
I have owned several Ford trucks, but my 2002 Ranger FX4 has cost me more money in maintenance costs in the last four years, that I could have bought the truck all over again. I have always kept meticulous care and maintained regularly per the recommended service intervals. Regardless of my preventative measures, the rear end, the transmission and the transfer case failed and had to be rebuilt; a computer module, two in-tank fuel pumps, EGR valve, O2 sensor and mass air flow meter have all failed as well. The insulating moulding around the doors don't seal properly and road noise is heard. The truck has 123k miles. The 4.0L engine is great.

Ideal small truck
If you need to tow yachts every day, the Ranger probably is not for you; get a Super Duty diesel. The Ranger also might not be right for you if you need a car that does 70+ mpg; get a Fiesta ECOnetic diesel. If you want something that can haul normal loads, cruise around at 25 mpg, and actually start in Winter, then the Ranger is definitely a good choice. Mine is 10 years old, nearing 150k miles, and is still running as well as the day I took it for the test drive. It is the most reliable, comfortable and practical vehicle I have ever owned It just never lets me down. In fact, aside from regular scheduled maintenance my truck has needed only 4 minor repairs, all of which were cases of me letting it down - not the other way around. I love this truck. It has served me very well, and I hope it continues to do so for a long time.

extremely versitile
I have the 02 ranger 4x4 with the 4.0 liter engine. runs great. i can literally do anything with this truck. ive towed cars, hauled 40 heavy bags of mulch several times, and taken the truck offroading almost every day, no problems. exceptional in sand, mud, and snow in both 2wd mode and 4wd mode. as for fuel economy i cant really complain at all, 22 mpg with the 4.0 and plenty of power. the only thing i would change would be to make the extended cab a bit bigger, enough room for a full rear bench seat as opposed to the rear jump seats. although i am more of a full size truck kinda guy, the ranger will always be one of my favorite vehicles.

Great Truck
About the only thing I would change would be to replace the sideways facing ''jump seats" with a small forward facing split bench seat like the one in the F-150.The only people that can fit back there are children and they do not like facing each other,95% of the time the seat is folded up and the space is used for storage.

Great Car
this car is my first car. i beat the car up and it still has absoultly no problems. after 30,000 miles i havnt had any problems. the 2 things i do wish is that it was a little bigger and it had a little more horse power. but other then that the car is wonderful. this little thing even towed my big 24 foot boat with the 3 litre engine.

Great Little Truck...I love it!
Bought a Supercab FX4 in 2002. It's my third Ranger. I could not pass up the red color and stylish looks. Seven years and 75,000 miles later it starts, runs and handles like the day I drove it off the lot. Everything about it is tight and well built, not light and chincy like others. The 4X4 has been awesome during the winters and back-country hunting and fishing trips. The power windows, locks, mirrors, AC, 4X4, and cruise control all continue to perform flawlessly. The 6-cylinder engine is plenty potent for a truck of this size. The extended cab fold-down seats will seat kids only. For reasons unknown, the rear axle chewed itself up at 50,000 miles or so, but was covered by warranty. It's definitely a truck and will let you know it every time you get it off road....it can be rough! Is is incredibly smooth and forgiving on pavement, though, and will earn your trust back. Gas mileage for mine runs 16-17 in the winter and 18-20 in the summer. Not as good as I'd like but I attribute it to the truck's weight...like I said it's heavy and well built. My first Ranger had over 150,000 problem-free miles before I lost it in an accident and the second had over 100,000 when I sold it. I won't get rid of this one (short of an accident) and see no reasons why this one won't achieve 200,000 plus. It's an incredibly durable, tight, well-built truck.
