I love my e39, and at 45 Y.O. I ENJOY my e39
For a car designed in the 1990's, it has been a car that always caught my eye, I have always had ONE BMW. At 45 Y.O. I appreciate the creature comforts of my e39. I love the drive train and the DCT. Lucky to have the M-Tech package. Its a VERY comfortable car. I have found that BMW was more comfortable and sporty than Mercedes was especially in the 1980's... 2000 BMW 528iA

The best
I have owned 2 of these and both have been amazing vehicles. This car has one of the strongest and most reliable engines I have ever seen. Does require regular maintenance but, hasn’t cost me any more to repair then other vehicles and hasn’t really left me stranded even when something fails. The engine is in sanely durable and blows me away , it will take a beating and still drive like a dream. I am rough on my cars and really put them to the test and this car beat every other car hands down! I have owned all types of cars Mercedes, Lexus, Saab, and even standard vehicles and none of them compare to the BMW 528i. If you want a great reliable , strong, and quick car that performed well and you will love then this car is perfect for you. The only things that I can say about this car that I noticed are a negative are the power window mechanism in some aren’t that great and can need replacement as well as the cup holders are very sensitive and will need replacing but, it’s not anything that would prevent me from owning this amazing car. I always wanted one of these but, used to avoid BMW like the plague on account of what I had seen and heard about costly and constant repairs..... now after owning 2 of the 528i bmw’s I have to say boy was I wrong because they are amazing cars and I don’t think I will ever want to drive anything other then BMW. GREAT , GREAT car all the way, hands down!

2000 BMW 528i - what a car
A singularly outstanding vehicle. Purchased my 2000 528i, manual transmission, new through the PX in Germany upon return from a Balkans deployment. Ordered it in late Dec 1999 and took possession 1st week of March. Biarritz blue matelic w/ gray Montana leather interior with wooden trim. Exterior color still is beautiful and the style lines are classic BMW. Very comfortable for the time, great sound system, CD player, etc. It cost $34.7K, but has been worth every penny over 19 years and 300,845 miles. Great performance, style, and safety for the family. Had vehicle twice in Germany and handling on autobahn at 90 to 120 mph was incredible. Could feel it squat down at about 85 mph. As another person noted, had to replace radiator at about 100K miles and also the clutch about 160K miles. The bearing on the 2nd clutch just failed, so have decided it is time to buy another. Even at this age, she still achieves 30 mpg on highway. Whether in US or Germany, always had it serviced by BMW. Costs more, but think quality of the work contributed to life of the vehicle. Know it is only a car, but after so many years it feels like losing a friend.

Have had this car for 14 years. I am second owner
This is one of the greatest cars ever built with proper service. The leather is second rate. Painted surfaces on the interior don't wear well. When suspension bushings wear out, there is a rattling noise when driving over brick pavers. Nearly 500 miles on a full tank is great. Quiet engine, stable at high speed, long lasting brakes. Comfortable seats. Powerful engine but sluggish transmission that could use 4 more gears in this era. Exterior paint still looks good after 18 years. Cold, quiet a/c. Low maintenance cost. Change oil every 4 months or 3 times per year. Tires last much longer than FWD cars.

Amazing Car
BMW has made a lot of great cars. This generation of 5 series is iconic and a true BMW. These cars are quiet, fast, powerful and they look great. The cost to own has been very low, the car has very few mechanical issues. It's 19 years old and still solid and reliable. A great ride.

Great Daily Driver
This is a great car to own. I bought mine with 93K miles, eight years ago and have enjoyed and used it regularly. The 2000 yr. 528iT is the last year of production for the e39 model. The only thing I have done in terms of service are oil and filter changes and I replaced the radiator for age issues with an all aluminum radiator and a Stewart water pump. Car still runs great with 143K miles. Safe, solid, great hauling capability and ~ 25mpg with the manual transmission (29.4 is the best I've gotten on repeat trip). We own an automatic as well and it gets 3-4mpg less milage. Overall a great purchase for under $10K ! Like the body style better than most new models.
