The 2023 Honda Accord is a five-occupant mid-size sedan that delivers agile handling, a roomy cabin, spacious trunk and a relaxed ride. Now in its 11th generation, the 2023 Accord receives a handsome exterior update that includes a redesigned grille and updated LED lighting, a larger available 12.3-inch touchscreen, a smidge more rear legroom and better fuel economy than its fuel-sipping predecessor (for the hybrid, at least).

Below is a breakdown of the 2023 Honda Accord’s EPA-estimated figures, driving ranges, and annual fuel costs — the latter of which is based on 15,000 miles of annual driving with city jaunts comprising 55% of all trips (these figures can be personalized on the EPA’s fuel economy site).

Peppy Turbo Four-Cylinder or Frugal Hybrid

The 2023 Accord’s standard engine is a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder that sends power to the front wheels courtesy of a continuously variable automatic transmission. The Accord Hybrid comes with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder paired to two electric motors and a small battery pack; combined output is 204 hp, and, like its gas-only counterpart, the Accord Hybrid comes with front-wheel drive and a CVT.

2023 Accord Vs. Gasoline Rivals

There’s a bit of good news and bad news when it comes to how the 2023 Honda Accord’s fuel economy fares against rival mid-size sedans. We’ll use the Toyota Camry and Nissan Altima as examples to compare with the Accord LX and EX trims equipped with the standard turbo four-cylinder.

Starting with the good news, the Accord returns an EPA-estimated 32 mpg during a mix of city and highway driving. Both the Camry and Altima, when equipped with their base four-cylinder engines and FWD, deliver the exact same 32 mpg average. This trio of sedans also has an identical annual fuel cost of $1,000, according to the EPA. While the Camry and Altima have slightly higher driving ranges of 506 and 518 miles, respectively, the Accord isn’t far behind at 474 miles between refuels — that is, if you enjoy running your sedan to absolute empty.

One minor drawback is that the 2023 Accord remains strictly a FWD proposition. The Camry and Altima each have all-wheel drive on their option sheet, and this could sway car shoppers willing to trade a few miles per gallon for additional grip during inclement weather.

2023 Accord Vs. Hybrid Rivals

Turning our attention to the Accord Hybrid, the most frugal of the three available trims is the mid-range EX-L; this is primarily due to the fact that it rolls on 17-inch wheels versus the 19-inch alloys that are standard on the Sport and Touring trims.

The Accord Hybrid EX-L posts a stout 48 mpg combined and can run more than 600 miles before you’ll require a pit stop. In comparison, the Sport and line-topping Touring trim return 44 mpg combined along with a driving range of 563 miles. Annual fuel costs are nearly identical; the EX-L comes in at $1,100 annually versus $1,200 in the Sport and Touring.

How does the Accord Hybrid compare to rivals such as the Camry Hybrid and Hyundai Sonata Hybrid? Similar to the Accord Hybrid, each sedan has a trim that’s tuned to return more miles for your dollar. The Camry Hybrid LE and Hyundai Sonata Blue both edge out the Accord Hybrid EX-L with a combined rating of 52 mpg. This fuel economy gap narrows when comparing other trims: The non-LE hybrid variants of the Camry deliver 46 mpg combined, while Sonata Hybrid trims outside the Blue version return a combined 47 mpg.
