What Does Mopar Stand For?

CARS.COM — Short for the Chrysler Motor Parts Corp., Mopar made its first appearance in the late 1920s and became its own brand in 1937 on a single product: antifreeze. From there, the Mopar catalog expanded to include waxes, cleaners, filters, engine parts and more.

Celebrating its 80th birthday in 2017, Mopar now encompasses the full line of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles parts, accessories, and customer service, including Fiat and Alfa Romeo brands along with Chrysler, Dodge and Ram trucks.

But for Mopar enthusiasts, the brand is most associated with performance, from its long history with NASCAR to legendary dragsters and sponsorships that continue today. Mopar.com devotes a substantial chunk of virtual real estate to burnishing that image while continuing to offer the goods, from historical information to 5.7-, 6.2- and 6.4-liter Hemi crate engines; cat-back exhaust systems; cosmetic add-ons; and even race-ready body kits.

Owners of vintage Chrysler, Jeep and AMC vehicles will find links to licensed suppliers of restoration parts, from sheet metal and body trim to carpets, decals and badging. The site also has shop manuals for do-it-yourselfers.

Mopar has even developed complete, turn-key race cars, starting with the 2009 Dodge Challenger Drag Pak. Lightened by around 1,000 pounds thanks to forgoing sound deadening, its HVAC system, windshield wipers and other creature comforts, the Drag Pak Challengers got Hemi or Magnum V-8s and were not legal for street use.

From its humble roots to a global brand with facilities around the world, Mopar remains the source for all things Chrysler. And yes, it still sells antifreeze.
