CARS.COM — If you own a late-model Volkswagen, Audi or Porsche with a diesel V-6, mark your calendar for Dec. 1. A federal court has set that date as the next deadline for the automaker and other parties to give an update on its 3.0-liter diesel V-6, an engine involved in the Volkswagen Group’s diesel emissions scandal. It powers more than 80,000 cars on the road from the automaker’s Volkswagen, Audi and Porsche brands:

The court held a status conference this morning. It comes nine days after Federal District Court Judge Charles Breyer, who oversees the case, approved a $14.7 billion settlement by the Volkswagen Group to conduct environmental remediation and repurchase some 475,000 four-cylinder diesel cars from the 2009 through 2015 model years involved in the emissions scandal. The buyback program, which will include additional restitution payments, is underway. If you have an affected car, start your online claim here or by phone at 844-982-5246.

The four-cylinder, like the V-6, has emissions software that emits illegal amounts of nitrogen oxide, a smog-forming pollutant. No fix for either engine exists yet, but four-cylinder owners have until September 2018 to decide whether to take the buyback and restitution offer — which totals, on average, 112.6 percent of an affected car’s value as of September 2015 — or accept an emissions fix and restitution payment alone.

By Dec. 1, diesel V-6 owners could know a little more about their options.

“As noted in Court today, we are making substantial progress in our efforts to reach an approved resolution for these 3.0-liter TDI V-6 vehicles as quickly as possible,” Volkswagen said in a statement. Until Dec. 1, all discussions must remain confidential by court order, VW added.
