Up Close With the 2023 Jeep Wagoneer L and Grand Wagoneer L

Jeep took a step into the full-size SUV segment with the launch of the 2022 Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer. Now, it’s fully embraced the big SUV class with the debut of the extended-wheelbase 2023 Wagoneer L and Grand Wagoneer L at the 2022 New York International Auto Show, where we got an up-close look at the behemoths. Stretching nearly 19 feet long, the new SUVs are slated to arrive at Jeep dealerships in the second half of 2022.

The Wagoneer L and Grand Wagoneer L are a foot longer than their regular-wheelbase siblings, and they wear their extra size well. The rear wheel wells don’t cut into the rear doors like they do on the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer, but the most noticeable change is the significantly longer rear-quarter windows. Overall, it’s a natural, well-proportioned design.
The extra length is put to good use in the cargo area, which offers significantly more room than the regular-wheelbase SUVs. Cargo space with the third row up measures 42.1 cubic feet in the Wagoneer L and 44.2 cubic feet in the Grand Wagoneer L, according to Jeep measurements, which makes the space much more usable when all three rows of seats are in use. That’s up to 61% more space behind the third row versus the standard wheelbase versions’ 27.4 cubic feet of cargo space.
Jeep didn’t put some of the SUVs’ extra length to work in the second and third rows, which have the same measurements as the regular-length SUVs. But it didn’t really need to modify the L’s rear seating because the regular-length versions already offer good space for adult passengers in both rows. In the third row, the seat cushion is set high enough that you don’t sit with your knees elevated at an uncomfortable angle, and headroom and legroom are good (I’m 6-foot-1).

Jeep had both the Wagoneer L and Grand Wagoneer L on the show floor, and while their interior designs are similar, there are significant differences in cabin materials to reflect the Grand Wagoneer’s luxury intentions. Jeep had a Grand Wagoneer L Series III on the show floor, and its cabin was finished in high-quality leather from the seats to the dashboard to the doors; in regular-wheelbase form, the high-end 2022 Grand Wagoneer Series III starts at $109,995 (including destination).
Jeep didn’t announce pricing for the long-wheelbase SUVs, but if it follows the model GM and Ford use for their long-wheelbase SUVs, expect the Wagoneer L and Grand Wagoneer L to be priced a few thousand dollars more than their shorter siblings, which start at $60,995 for the Wagoneer and $89,995 for the Grand Wagoneer.
