CARS.COM — There was lots of chatter headed into the 2017 New York International Auto Show about how Toyota’s FT-4X concept could presage some form of FJ Cruiser reboot. But, FYI to those betting on a new FJ in the FT-4X, you’re SOL. The concept, unveiled today in New York, is a subcompact SUV far closer to Toyota’s C-HR and catering to an urban-dwelling millennial buyer prone to far wimpier adventures than would necessitate the FJ’s off-road prowess.

Shorter in length than the C-HR, but wider and taller, the four-wheel-drive FT-4X really distinguishes itself with its unconventional exterior styling that takes the “X” in its name and runs with it. Its sides are pinched to create a convex X shape that pushes out to the vehicle’s widest point. The lines of the X extend all the way to the rear cargo doors, the center of the hood, and the front and rear flared fenders, while a contrast-colored body element wraps around the front to create a masked bandito effect.

The rear end is dominated by a blacked-out “picture window” along with starkly contrasting white panels centered on the hinged double cargo doors that swing open from the center. A large Toyota logo adorns the right-side door and a massive, circular mechanism unlatches the doors by rotating the bisecting handle.

Inside is an arsenal of clever, ready-for-anything gadgetry that would rival any 007 Aston Martin and make MacGyver enviously wonder, “How’d they come up with that?” Read all about those features here, and check out the photo gallery above.
