Aside from some issues with its Cybertruck, it’s been a quiet couple months in terms of recalls for electric-vehicle automaker Tesla. But now, a problem involving the hood latch has prompted the company to issue a recall for more than 1.8 million vehicles affecting the rest of its lineup.
Affected vehicles include model-year 2020-24 Model Y SUVs and model-year 2021-24 Model 3 and Model S sedans and Model X SUVs. The latch assembly on these vehicles may not detect that the hood is open, preventing a driver notification when the vehicle is placed into Drive. An unlatched hood could open while the vehicle is in motion, increasing the risk of a crash.
To resolve the issue, Tesla has released an over-the-air software update. The automaker will notify owners Sept. 22, but owners can contact it in the meantime at 877-798-3752 (Tesla’s number for this recall is SB-24-00-012), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or visit its website to check your vehicle identification number and learn more.
