CARS.COM — As far as I’m concerned, super retailer Target wins April. First, there was its collaboration with Victoria Beckham — a showcase of the designer’s duds at discount prices. Now, it’s focusing on something a little more serious: Starting today, Target is partnering with TerraCycle to recycle car seats.

My garage is pretty much a car seat graveyard now that my three kids are finally in boosters. I’ve always loathed the idea of tossing my stash of infant and toddler car seats as most of them remain in good condition and have thankfully never been involved in an accident. Moreover, I can’t imagine how long a car seat takes to decompose in a landfill considering a mere plastic bottle takes about 450 years to break down. Could it be that a car seat might never break down fully?

Target’s initiative aims to recycle those old seats so they can be used to make new products. Its goal is to keep as much as 700,000 pounds of car seat materials out of the landfill and instead repurposed into other goods.

How can you get on board? Bring in your old car seat(s) to your local Target and drop it in one of the recycled bins that will be located either in the baby section or at the front of the store. As a bonus, you get a coupon for 20 percent off another car seat purchase once you’ve turned your old one in.

This program will run through April 30, so do some Spring Cleaning, honor April as Earth Month and bring your car seats in to be recycled. I doubt there are any Victoria Beckham clothes left since they seem to have sold out pretty swiftly, but you never know — your karma ought to be good with this trick, so you just might get lucky.
