Redesigned for 2024, the BMW X2 is larger than its predecessor, contributing to a more spacious cabin. Not only are occupants more comfortable inside, but they’re well protected, as well: The compact SUV has been named a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
IIHS rates vehicle performance on a scale of poor, marginal, acceptable or good. To qualify as a Top Safety Pick, a vehicle must earn good ratings in two frontal crash tests and a side impact test. The vehicle’s standard headlights must also rank acceptable or good, and it has to offer a forward collision avoidance system that rates acceptable or good in a pedestrian detection test.
The 2024 BMW X2 earned top marks in every evaluation. IIHS does bestow the higher Top Safety Pick+ honors to vehicles that also earn an acceptable or good rating in the updated moderate overlap test that includes a dummy in the seat behind the driver, but as that test is new, the agency has a lot of vehicles to smash before ratings will be available for everything on the market. The X2 has not yet been subject to the updated test, but its performance thus far has laid the groundwork for a promotion should it be tested in the future.
