Competes with: BMW X7, Cadillac Escalade, Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class, Jeep Grand Wagoneer

Looks like: A larger Range Rover Velar

Powertrains: 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder with 395 horsepower (SE), 4.4-liter turbocharged V-8 with 523 hp (SE, Autobiography, First Edition) or plug-in hybrid drivetrain with 434 hp (upcoming 2023 model); eight-speed automatic transmission; four-wheel drive

Hits dealerships: Spring 2022, but orders are available now

The Land Rover Range Rover is capable of navigating rugged terrain thanks to its advanced four-wheel drive system and other off-road enhancements, but that doesn’t mean its occupants are roughing it. On the contrary, Land Rover’s flagship SUV is packed with luxury amenities and a premium price to match. As the redesigned Range Rover is revealed, Land Rover will split the 2022 model year between the current generation that’s on sale now and the next-gen SUV arriving in spring 2022.

The redesigned 2022 Range Rover brings a sleeker exterior, optional third row, new V-8 engine, upgraded creature comforts and new tech. It also discards several trim options, powertrains and a sub-six-figure starting price.

Worth noting: Land Rover’s move to spread the Range Rover name to three other SUVs might confuse some shoppers. The suffix-free Range Rover is a distinct model priced above the rest, now more than ever.

At launch, the new Range Rover will come in three trims: SE, Autobiography and First Edition. Each model is offered with a short or long wheelbase, with the extended wheelbase accommodating five or seven passengers. The base trim, SE, comes with a standard turbo 3.0-liter inline-six-cylinder engine with mild-hybrid technology that carries over from the current Range Rover; it makes 395 horsepower and 406 pounds-feet of torque. Shoppers looking for a power upgrade can go with an optional turbo 4.4-liter V-8 for 523 hp and 553 pounds-feet of torque.

The current Range Rover’s supercharged V-8, which makes 557 hp, will not return in the next-gen model, nor will the available diesel V-6. Although the outgoing model’s V-8 offers more power, the new 4.4-liter boasts considerably better acceleration: 4.4 seconds to 60 mph compared to the outgoing 5.1 seconds, according to Land Rover’s estimates. The SUV’s maximum towing capacity, 7,716 pounds, remains unchanged from the previous model.

After the initial launch of the fifth-generation Range Rover for 2022, a new plug-in hybrid model with 434 hp will arrive for the 2023 model year to replace the outgoing 398-hp PHEV. An all-electric Range Rover will follow for 2024.

Easier to Drive On-Road or Off

Land Rover says the 2022 Range Rover will bring improved capability and handling thanks to its new MLA-Flex architecture. That architecture also accommodates the upcoming plug-in models as well as the Range Rover’s two- and three-row seating configurations.

A new system, Integrated Chassis Control with Dynamic Response Pro, uses active stabilizer bars to mitigate real-time body roll based on intuited road conditions. It can also completely decouple the two halves of each axle’s stabilizer bar to provide maximum wheel articulation during off-road situations.

For drivers who are willing to go off-road, the Range Rover’s 4WD system is optimized for maneuverability at low speeds. The SUV’s active locking rear differential and terrain response system with six driver modes (Grass/Gravel/Snow, Mud Ruts, Sand, Eco, Rock Crawl, Wade) optimize traction on uneven and challenging terrain.

An electrically operated rear axle turns independently of the front wheels at low speeds to help shrink the SUV’s turning circle to 36 feet, down from 40.5 feet in the outgoing model. New maneuvering lights illuminate the perimeter of the vehicle to help drivers safely navigate tight, dimly lit spaces.

The next-gen Range Rover retains its classic shape with a sloped roofline and short front overhang, with a sleeker body and flush door handles. The changes make the 2022 Range Rover resemble its less-expensive sibling, the Range Rover Velar.

A new air intake with integrated fog lights is the most notable change to the Range Rover’s front end, while the shape of the grille and headlights remain mostly unchanged. The rear sees a new “boat tail” design, which keeps the SUVs split tailgate and features hidden taillights that are only visible when illuminated. Power-assisted doors with integrated hazard detection will be available for 2023 models.

For the first time, the Range Rover will be able to accommodate seven passengers, courtesy of an optional third row and second-row bench seats for its long-wheelbase models. The short-wheelbase model, as well as the long-wheelbase model without a third row, seat five occupants each. The next-gen Range Rover will also offer a more versatile cargo area with an optional loadspace floor system that can serve as a partition for storage or a backrest when using the lower tailgate for seating (a feature handy for camping or tailgating).

An upgraded Meridian Signature sound system features noise-canceling technology integrated into the head restraints. Land Rover says the system emulates the effect of high-end headphones and provides a more peaceful ride experience.

A single 13.1-inch touchscreen replaces the previous generation’s 10-inch dual touchscreens. The outgoing system employed the lower screen for multimedia, climate and navigation controls, but its minimal feedback proved a chief complaint in our review of the model. The new floating touchscreen gets physical climate controls and finally promises to offer haptic feedback for its touch controls. A 13.7-inch digital gauge cluster gets high-definition graphics across a three-panel customizable layout.

Second-row passengers get a new rear-seat entertainment option with larger 11.4-inch dual touchscreens (up from 10 inches in the previous model). Other tech and connectivity improvements include built-in Amazon Alexa with advanced voice recognition, wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a premium SiriusXM subscription.

Coming Soon: Electrified and SV Models

Following the arrival of the gas-powered Range Rover, the next-gen Range Rover PHEV will be available for the 2023 model year. The new hybrid will combine the same six-cylinder engine from the base Range Rover SE along with an 38.2-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery and a 105-kilowatt electric motor. The new model will get a combined 434 hp (up from 400 hp in the outgoing PHEV) and 62 miles of electric range. Land Rover says an all-electric Range Rover will arrive for the 2024 model year but revealed no other details.

Along with electrification, the 2023 model year will bring more luxury to the range-topping SV model. Previously offered as an upgrade to the Range Rover Autobiography, the SV (that stands for Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations division) will come as a stand-alone trim. It will offer two design themes that incorporate contrasting two-tone exteriors and exclusive interior materials, like plated metals, ceramics, premium leather or high-end leather-free alternatives.

The upgrades for the next-gen Range Rover don’t come cheap. The new 2022 Range Rover starts at $105,350 for the base SE (all prices include the destination charge), up more than $12,000 over the outgoing Range Rover’s base model. The Autobiography trim jumps by $7,500 for the short wheelbase or $5,000 for the long wheelbase. The First Edition, based on the Autobiography and available with exclusive Sunset Gold Satin paint, starts at $159,550.

The 2022 Range Rover’s starting price tag is substantially higher than competitors — among them like the 2022 BMW X7 ($75,895), Cadillac Escalade ($77,990), and Mercedes Benz GLS-Class ($77,050). The Jeep Grand Wagoneer also enters the large premium SUV market for 2022 with a base price that undercuts the Range Rover at $89,845.

The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover SE, Autobiography and First Edition models will arrive by spring 2022. Pricing for the 2023 Range Rover PHEV and SV has not yet been announced.
