Vehicles Affected: Approximately 482,000 model-year 2010-12 Toyota Prius hybrids, model-year 2010 and 2012 Prius Plug-In hybrids, and model-year 2011-12 Lexus CT 200h hybrids

The Problem: The affected vehicles are equipped with curtain shield airbags in the driver-and passenger-side roof rails that have inflators composed of two welded-together chambers. Some inflators could have a small crack in the weld area joining the chambers that could grow over time and lead to a separation of the chambers, in which case the airbags could partially inflate and one or both sections of the inflator could enter the interior of the vehicle, increasing the risk of an injury. Toyota said the separation of the inflator chambers has been observed when vehicles are parked and unoccupied for a length of time.

The Fix: Dealers will install retention brackets on the curtain shield airbag inflators for free. The brackets are designed to prevent the inflator chambers from entering the vehicle interior if a separation occurs.

What Owners Should Do: Toyota did not immediately announce an owner-notification schedule. Owners can call Toyota at 800-331-4331 or Lexus at 800-255-3987 for more info.
