Ford is recalling 425,288 Windstar minivans from the 1999-2003 model years because corroded parts could lead to reduced steering control, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The affected vehicles were originally sold or currently registered in the following states: Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia.

A separation of the front lower control arm rear attaching bracket could cause the lower control arm to separate from the vehicle’s subframe, resulting in reduced steering control and increasing the risk of a crash.

Dealers will inspect the brackets and the subframe and make necessary repairs at no charge. The recall is expected to begin Feb. 14. Owners can call Ford at 866-436-7332 or NHTSA’s safety hotline at 888-327-4236.
