Plus Pending: 2024 Volkswagen ID.4 Named IIHS Top Safety Pick

Volkswagen’s electric ID.4 SUV is the automaker’s first electric vehicle of the modern era, and VW plans to build numerous vehicles on the ID.4’s basic architecture, which the automaker calls MEB. It’s an encouraging sign for MEB-based vehicles to come, then, that the 2024 ID.4 has been named a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

IIHS grades vehicle performance on a scale of poor, marginal, acceptable or good. To qualify as a Top Safety Pick, vehicles must earn good ratings in two frontal crash tests and a side impact test. Additionally, headlights that rate at least acceptable must be standard, and the vehicle’s forward collision warning system must score at least acceptable in a pedestrian-avoidance test. The ID.4 earned qualifying marks in the three crash tests, and its standard headlights and crash-prevention system ranked acceptable; the SUV’s optional headlights scored a good rating.
The three crash tests required for Top Safety Pick status are all conducted with a single dummy in the vehicle. To qualify for the agency’s highest honor, Top Safety Pick+, a vehicle must also earn acceptable or good in the updated moderate overlap front crash that places a smaller dummy in the seat behind the driver. The ID.4 has not yet been subject to this test, which is not unusual; if it does undergo that test later, it can return to being a Top Safety Pick+ as it was for the 2021-23 model years. Either way, it looks like Volkswagen’s MEB EV architecture is a solid foundation.
