Nissan Rogue Not Going Rogue Where Crash Safety Is Concerned

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety named the model-year 2019 and 2020 Nissan Rogue Top Safety Picks, the auto safety advocacy organization’s second-highest designation. The Rogue missed out on the agency’s highest award, Top Safety Pick Plus, after receiving only an acceptable rating in the passenger-side small overlap front crash test. Additionally, its highest rated set of headlights — optional LED units — also were rated acceptable; other available headlights rated poor.

The Rogue received good ratings — on a scale of good, acceptable, marginal or poor — in the driver-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint crash tests. Its optional suite of safety features was rated as superior on a scale of superior, advanced or basic.

To qualify for a Top Safety Pick, a vehicle must receive a good rating in those five tests and either an acceptable or good rating in the passenger-side small overlap test, as well as advanced or superior ratings for available front crash prevention systems and acceptable or good ratings for at least one set of available headlights. For the higher Top Safety Pick Plus designation, both the headlight rating and the passenger-side small overlap front test must earn good ratings.

For the Rogue, the passenger-side small overlap front rating also applies to 2018 models built after April 2018. The Rogue did not perform well when the test was introduced by IIHS, and Nissan reinforced the Rogue at that time to provide better crash protection.

The Rogue faces stiff competition in its class, as the 2019 Hyundai Tucson, 2019 Mazda CX-5, 2019 Subaru Forester and 2019 Toyota RAV4 are all IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus designees, and the 2019 Honda CR-V is a Top Safety Pick.
