New Scion iM Conservative, But That's a Good Thing (29 Photos)

One of the most striking aspects of the new Scion iM hatchback, introduced at the 2015 New York International Auto Show, is just how low it looks in person. The roof is just 55 inches high, and the low-slung stance is further emphasized by the standard body kit with rocker panel and bumper extensions. It is a Scion after all.

The iM introduces a new front-end style to the youth-oriented Scion brand, and I like it quite a bit. The mesh upper and lower grilles have a piano-black finish that looks upscale and sporty, and angular headlights add a dose of aggressiveness. It’s a refreshing change from some of Scion’s past designs like the xD.

The first thing I noticed from the iM’s driver’s seat was the dashboard. It’s vertical and tall, and very similar to the design Toyota uses in its Corolla sedan. Overall materials quality is decent, but the new Scion iA sedan, which also debuted at the New York Auto Show, has better materials consistency in its cabin. The iA, though, is supposed to be about $4,000 less expensive than the iM, which will be priced less than $20,000. Huh?

Comfortable front seats and generous backseat room mean the iM should have no trouble carrying four adults at the same time. A standard 60/40-split folding backseat increases cargo-carrying versatility.
From its boxy xB to its iQ minicar, unique-looking hatchbacks have been a Scion staple since the brand’s inception more than a decade ago. The new iM is the most conventionally styled hatchback Scion has ever offered, but that doesn’t diminish its appeal.
