It’s common for mainstream automotive brands to recall rearview cameras in part because they’re federally mandated and every vehicle needs one, and nearly 145,000 Kia Sorentos are the latest such victim of a failing backup camera component.
Affected vehicles include model-year 2022-23 Kia Sorento, Sorento Hybrid and Sorento Plug-In Hybrid SUVs. The mounting clips for the rearview camera may break, which can cause the camera’s image to not appear properly on the display. A rearview camera that doesn’t properly display an image can reduce the driver’s rear view, increasing the risk of a crash.
To fix the issue, dealers will inspect and replace the rearview camera housing, as necessary, for free. Kia will begin sending owner notification letters Oct. 27, but those with further questions in the meantime can call the brand at 800-333-4542 (recall number SC280), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or visit its website to check your vehicle identification number and learn more.
