Kia will be debuting the successor to the compact Forte at the New York International Auto Show in late March, and we are getting our first peek under the veil. A trio of moody studio shots give us a look at the boldly styled sedan, set to be called K4.
The photos show a daring C-pillar treatment in which the corner of the roof appears to barely contact the bodywork aft of the rear doors, like Adam and God stretching toward one another in Michelangelo’s The Creation of Adam or E.T. healing Elliot’s finger. Under the light of day, expect a black panel extending rearward from the window to conceal a good bit more structural metal there. The lighting in the shots also makes the fenders — particularly the rear ones — appear dramatically flared, but we’re guessing that’s a trick of the lighting, as a body so shaped would be wildly impractical on the street.
And practicality matters for cars like this. While Kia says these photos “evoke an exceptional fusion of advanced technology and alluring aesthetics,” they also show a car that should have a base price somewhere in the low $20,000 range. The company has shared no technical details yet, but the K4 is likely to use the Forte’s gas-burning 2.0-liter and turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engines.
All questions shall be answered March 21, when Kia will give us our first complete, well-lit look at the K4 ahead of the sedan’s premiere in New York March 27.
