CARS.COM — Anytime a popular smartphone like the iPhone is updated you hope there aren’t issues integrating it with your car. We grabbed the new iPhone 7 with the latest iOS 10.0.1 operating system and dug into Cars.com’s current test fleet to see if any problems popped up. We put the new phone through its paces in a range of vehicles with and without Apple CarPlay

On hand for our iPhone 7 testing were the 2016 Volkswagen Golf R with Apple CarPlay, the 2017 Toyota Sienna Limited Premium, the 2017 Nissan Armada Platinum, the 2016 Volvo XC90 T6 with Apple CarPlay and the 2016 Dodge Durango Citadel.

We plugged in and experienced no problems using the iPhone 7 through USB and Bluetooth connectivity in the aforementioned cars. An added bonus for the vehicles with Apple CarPlay are iOS 10 updates with new features added to the already stout-performing phone integration feature.

New functions include movable application icons so you can move Spotify or other apps on the CarPlay home page. Not all icons are movable, including biggies like Phone, Music, Maps and Messages. Apple Maps is more robust with new traffic rerouting and improved traffic notification, plus it’s compatible with cars that display directional indicators in the instrument cluster or head-up display. Finally, the revamped Apple Music has a more intuitive in-car interface with simpler music library navigation that caps off the slight, but noticeably improved, CarPlay update for iOS 10.
