After repeatedly topping the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s list of most stolen cars in recent years, the Dodge Charger has dropped completely out of the top 20 in this year’s study. Replacing it instead is another popular muscle car.

The report ranks vehicles from the three prior model years and is compiled by the data analysis arm of IIHS, the Highway Loss Data Institute. Since vehicles that sell in higher numbers are, generally speaking, more likely to be stolen, HLDI normalizes the data as claims per insured vehicle year — one vehicle insured for one year, two vehicles insured for six months and so on.

Camaro Concerns

In poring over the data, HLDI noted that theft rates for the Camaro were consistent in recent years but spiked in 2023 and have continued to rise. That increase was primarily driven by the sixth-generation Camaro, which launched for 2016 and introduced keyless start; according to HLDI, thieves have been able to clone the car’s key fob by accessing the OBD-II data port used by technicians to help diagnose mechanical problems. The agency notes that GM launched a service campaign in March to update the vehicle’s software for additional security.

Also noteworthy is the prevalence of GM pickup trucks on the list after being wholly absent from it in recent years. Ford and Ram pickups have been popular targets in the past (and the latter’s light-duty 1500 and 3500 appear again this year), but GM pickups hold six of the top 20 spots. This raises the question of whether the Silverado and Sierra may suffer from some vulnerability similar to that of the Camaro.

Korean Rebound

Things look much better over at Hyundai and Kia. After a recent social-media-fueled crime wave saw vehicles from the two brands stolen in record numbers, the companies designed multiple fixes that are available for free to owners, some of which are software based and some physical. Only about 40% of the eligible vehicles have received the upgrades so far, but theft rates among those models is less than half of what they are for those that haven’t been upgraded. Since Hyundai and Kia began making electronic immobilizers standard in many of their vehicles, HLDI says the theft rate of 2022-24 models is “substantially lower” than the industry average.
