CARS.COM — Hyundai has confirmed that it will unveil the U.S. version of its new Kona subcompact SUV at the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show this week.

The small SUV was first shown in South Korea in June as a 2018 model and is expected to go on sale in the U.S. early next year, also as a 2018 model. A variety of engines were announced for global markets, but the U.S. details were not specified at that time. An electric version also is planned, at least for South Korea. You can find more details and more photos of the new Hyundai Kona here in our preview from the world unveiling.

The Kona is an important introduction for Hyundai, which has seen U.S. results slip this year for its car-heavy lineup as buyers snap up SUVs. The Kona fits into the lineup under the Tucson compact SUV, and it enters the growing — and hotly competitive — subcompact SUV field to take on rivals including the Chevrolet Trax, Honda HR-V, Jeep Renegade, Nissan Rogue Sport and Toyota C-HR.

Editor’s note: This story was updated Nov. 27, 2017, to reflect the on-sale U.S. model year.
