Volvo just debuted the ES90, an all-new electric vehicle that ensures the Swedish brand’s sedan buyers are taken care of as the auto industry shifts toward electrification. For those who aren’t ready to make that transition, though, the S90 is still available with mild- and plug-in hybrid powertrains. Volvo is dropping the “Recharge” branding from all of its PHEVs for the 2025 model year, with the S90 PHEV now denoted by a T8 badge on its trunk lid. Otherwise, Volvo’s largest luxury sedan is unchanged.

What Are the 2025 Volvo S90’s Trim Levels?

Other than their powertrains, the mild-hybrid S90 B6 and PHEV S90 T8 are identical. In both, the entry-level Plus trim rides on 19-inch wheels and features a panoramic moonroof, hands-free power-operated trunk, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and keyless entry and start. Inside are leather upholstery, power-adjustable front seats, heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel, four-zone automatic climate control, and power-operated rear window shades. Standard tech on the S90 includes a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, 10 speakers, and a 9-inch touchscreen with navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Buyers who step up to the Ultra get a little extra glam on the outside with 20-inch wheels and chrome mirror caps. The Ultra’s cabin features Nappa leather seating, ventilated front seats with adjustable thigh support and side bolsters, upgraded dash and door trim with contrast stitching, a crystal shift knob, head-up display and 14-speaker Harman Kardon audio.

Volvo equips every 2025 S90 with the same suite of driver-assistance systems. The list includes forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, lane departure steering assist, blind spot monitors, rear cross-traffic alert, road-sign recognition, a 360-degree camera system, and front, rear and side parking sensors.

What Are the 2025 Volvo S90’s Powertrain Specs and MPG?

The 2025 S90 is available with two powertrain choices. The mild-hybrid S90 is powered by a turbo- and supercharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 295 horsepower and 310 pounds-feet of torque. Backed by an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive, the S90 returns an EPA-rated 23/31/26 mpg city/highway/combined.

The S90 T8 adds a stout electric motor to the S90’s already-complex 2.0-liter four-cylinder, ratcheting total output up to 455 hp and 523 pounds-feet of torque. That enables what Volvo claims is a 4.6-second sprint from 0-60 mph and, with an 18.8-kilowatt-hour battery pack, up to 38 miles of electric-only range at 29 mpg-equivalent.
