How Far Can a Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe Trailhawk Go on Electric Power Alone?

Our long-term 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe Trailhawk has EPA-estimated electric range of 25 miles on a full charge, and earlier this year, we traveled 21.9 miles on electric power alone on a mild winter day. Until recently, however, we hadn’t put it through a warm-weather electric range test.

On a recent July morning, we got our chance to see what the Jeep could do without the hindrance of range-sapping cold weather. With a fully charged battery and the Jeep’s instrument panel showing 25 miles of all-electric range, I set out on a driving loop north of Chicago that I regularly use to test vehicles. The route includes a mix of suburban streets with stop-and-go driving along with faster-moving urban interstates.
My driving procedures for this test were similar to the ones we use for our real-world fuel-economy testing: I drove normally with the windows up, the climate system in its Auto setting, the powertrain in a regular setting (in this case, Auto) and cruise control off. The Grand Cherokee 4xe’s Max Regen feature, which significantly slows the SUV as you lift your foot off the accelerator pedal, was active during the drive. I’ve grown accustomed to using Max Regen during our time with the Grand Cherokee, and I prefer the experience of near-one-pedal driving that it offers.

Temperatures were in the upper 60s and lower 70s Fahrenheit during the drive, and there was also some light rain in the area. It wasn’t the most ideal conditions, but the Jeep still traveled 25.6 miles on electric power alone — spot on with its EPA estimate — before switching to its gas-electric Hybrid mode. The smooth and quiet driving experience the Jeep offers when it’s operating as an electric vehicle has been one of the highlights of our ownership, and more EV range would make the experience even better.

Even so, 25 miles of all-electric driving is respectable for a larger off-road SUV like the Grand Cherokee 4xe Trailhawk, and it may be enough range to cover your typical daily driving needs.
