How Does the 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L's MPG Stack Up Against Its Rivals?

If you’re looking for a vehicle with ample interior space and a variety of seating and storage configurations, the mid-size SUV class has it all. But another way to see how much bang you’re getting for your buck is fuel economy, so we’ve compared the 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L’s miles per gallon, driving range and annual fuel costs to those of its mid-size rivals that also offer three rows of seating.

In 2021, the stretched-length Grand Cherokee L joined its standard-wheelbase Grand Cherokee counterpart, which took home the title of Cars.com’s Best SUV for 2023 and is currently Jeep’s bestselling vehicle. The SUV gets a maximum EPA-estimated 21 mpg combined in both rear-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive variants.
The L version is available in four trims and offers three-row seating with the option of a bench or captain’s chairs in the second row. The Grand Cherokee L also comes standard with a 290-horsepower, 3.6-liter V-6 engine or an available 357-hp, 5.7-liter V-8. Both are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, and buyers can choose between RWD or 4WD.

Against the Competition
Below is an overview of the Jeep Grand Cherokee L’s fuel economy, along with its model-year 2023 rivals in the mid-size SUV class, according to the EPA. On the EPA’s fuel economy site, you can personalize the estimate to fit your driving habits and updated fuel prices. The annual fuel costs listed are based on an annual 15,000 miles of 55% city driving and current fuel prices.
For this list, we used the SUVs’ AWD or 4WD variants; when AWD wasn’t an option, we used the rating for the 4WD variant. Both provide better handling and traction, making them a popular option among buyers. AWD is a good fit for all-weather conditions and light off-roading, while 4WD can handle heavier loads and more challenging terrain. Excluded from the list are the 2023 Kia Telluride, due to its similarity to the Hyundai Palisade, and the 2023 Chevrolet Traverse, of which the EPA doesn’t have exhaustive fuel-economy estimates.
Against the competition, the Grand Cherokee L gets a max EPA-estimated 21 mpg combined, which is the lowest rating on the list and matches that of the Honda Pilot, Hyundai Palisade and Subaru Ascent. The winners don’t exactly leave this SUV in the dust, though: The most fuel-efficient mid-size three-row SUV on the list, the Toyota Highlander, gets a combined rating of 24 mpg. The Volkswagen Atlas sees a combined rating of 22 mpg, while the Ford Explorer and Mazda CX-9 tie with an EPA-estimated 23 mpg combined.
