How Do Car Seats Fit in a 2024 Volvo S90 Recharge?

The verdict: For 2024, the Volvo S90 luxury sedan comes with either a turbocharged four-cylinder gas engine with a mild-hybrid system or as the S90 Recharge plug-in hybrid. The S90 is also available in wagon form as the V90. This Car Seat Check covers the Recharge sedan; the plug-in version has the same amount of rear legroom as the regular hybrid variant; see them compared. The S90 Recharge scored well thanks to accessible Latch anchors and ample legroom. We struggled with how the back seat’s fixed head restraints affected the booster and our forward-facing convertible car seat, however.

Does it fit three car seats? No, but nearly. We were able to install our three car seats, but there wasn’t enough space between the booster and the infant seat for a child to buckle into the booster; narrower car seats should work better.

Take a look at how the Latch system and each car seat scored below in our Car Seat Check of the 2024 Volvo S90 Recharge.

A Grade

  • Latch: The two sets of lower anchors sit under flip-up covers; they’re easy to find and use. Three top tether anchors sit on the rear shelf behind head restraints and are clearly labeled and easy to use.
  • Infant: The seat installed easily, and there was ample legroom for the 5-foot-6-inch front passenger with the infant seat installed in the row behind them.
  • Rear-facing convertible: There were no installation issues, and as with the infant seat, the rear-facing convertible fit well and did not impact our front passenger’s legroom.

B Grade

  • None

C Grade

  • Forward-facing convertible: This seat was easy to install via the lower anchors, but we struggled a bit with the top tether. According to the owner’s manual, we had to route the tether anchor strap under the fixed head restraint, and our tether strap’s metal connector got wedged under the head restraint; it took a few minutes to free it as it’s a tight space. Also, the fixed head restraint pushes the car seat off the seatback; it should sit flush against it.
  • Booster: The fixed head restraint pushed the booster off the seatback; it should sit flush against it. The seat bottom cushion is heavily bolstered and pushed the booster’s base into the buckle, which made it difficult to grasp the buckle.

Grading Scale

A: Plenty of room for the car seat and the child; doesn’t impact driver or front-passenger legroom. Easy to find and connect to Latch and tether anchors. No fit issues involving head restraint or seat contouring. Easy access to the third row.

B: One room, fit or connection issue. Some problems accessing the third row when available.

C: Marginal room plus one fit or connection issue. Difficult to access the third row when available.

D: Insufficient room, plus multiple fit or connection issues.

F: Does not fit or is unsafe.

About Cars.com’s Car Seat Checks

Editors Jennifer Geiger and Jennifer Newman are certified child safety seat installation technicians.

For the Car Seat Check, we use a Chicco KeyFit 30 infant-safety seat, a Graco Contender 65 convertible seat and Graco TurboBooster seat. The front seats are adjusted for a 6-foot driver and a shorter passenger. The three child seats are installed in the second row. The booster seat sits behind the driver’s seat, and the infant and convertible seats are installed behind the front passenger seat.

We also install the forward-facing convertible in the second row’s middle seat with the booster and infant seat in the outboard seats to see if three car seats will fit; a child sitting in the booster seat must be able to reach the seat belt buckle. If there’s a third row, we install the booster seat and a forward-facing convertible. Learn more about how we conduct our Car Seat Checks.

Parents should also remember that they can use the Latch system or a seat belt to install a car seat, and that Latch anchors have a weight limit of 65 pounds, including the weight of the child and the weight of the seat itself.
