CARS.COM — The subcompact Honda Fit hatchback has proven a frugal fuel sipper that at times returned fuel economy better than its EPA ratings during its 14,400 miles in Cars.com long-term fleet. However, our Honda’s lifetime average of 33.5 mpg comes up a bit short of the EPA’s 35 mpg combined rating (32 mpg city, 38 mpg highway). Lifelong fuel economy is measured using a calculation of total miles and gallons of fuel added over the life of the vehicle.

Shining moments for our Honda Fit hatchback include fill-ups measuring more than 40 mpg, besting the 38 mpg highway rating when highway speeds weren’t too fast. Gas mileage seemed to plummet above 70 mph, however, and long road trips weren’t really the Honda Fit’s thing considering at 70 mph cabin noise sounds like there’s an industrial fan inside. Mileage figures aside, the Honda’s tiny 10.6-gallon fuel tank also meant frequent fill-ups on long journeys in the hatchback.

Gas stations were a familiar sight during the Honda Fit’s 14,400 miles — it felt like we had to put gas in the Fit every time we drove the car. The plus side of the Honda’s small tank was ridiculously cheap fill-ups costing just $20.80 on average. We replenished about 7 to 8 gallons each time, and that was good to send the Honda an average of 258 miles between refueling. On the low end, the Honda Fit posted more than a few fill-ups in the mid-to-low 20 mpg range, though mostly in the colder months.

A combination of low fuel prices during our time with the Honda Fit hatchback as well as its miserly fuel economy meant the Honda’s total fuel tally was just $1,317.60 after 11 months of ownership.
