Ford is getting dark — really dark — when it comes to a new special edition of its all-electric F-150 Lightning pickup truck. Due to arrive in early 2024 and with a starting price of $99,990 (including a $1,995 destination charge), the 2024 F-150 Lightning Platinum Black takes the range-topping Platinum trim and gives it an aggressive monochromatic appearance. The automaker said production will be limited to 2,000 examples.

As the name not so subtly suggests, the chosen monochromatic hue is black. The Platinum Black sports a matte-black wrapped exterior, which Ford says makes this the company’s first matte-wrapped production truck, and rides on 22-inch matte-black alloy wheels. Cosmetically speaking, if Darth Vader needs to make a run to Lowe’s for some lumber, this will suit the bill nicely.

Additional exterior touches include an Agate Black roof that’s designed to visually blend with the windshield and side windows, which enhances and contrasts with the matte-black bodywork. The door handles are also finished in Agate Black in part, according to Ford, to help protect against smudges. There are also black Ford badges, a soft-shell black tonneau cover for the 5.5-foot cargo bed, a smoked-finish front light bar, reflective Lightning rear logos and power-deployable running boards with Agate Black trim.

The interior is upholstered in premium black leather, and a pair of Lightning graphics are positioned toward the rear of the glass roof panel above the second row. The electric pickup also has aluminum plates in the front trunk (or frunk) and the front driver-side door jamb with numbering that denotes which of the 2,000 examples a Platinum Black driver happens to be piloting.

What hasn’t changed from the regular F-150 Lighting Platinum is that model’s standard all-wheel drive, available Ford Blue Cruise hands-free driving assistance, a 15.5-inch infotainment touchscreen, the Co-Pilot 360 Active 2.0 suite of safety features, and the extended range battery pack that provides an EPA-estimated driving range of 300 miles.

With its starting price hovering around $100,000, the Platinum Black is about $48,000 more expensive than the Lightning’s base version. That’s after a price drop in July saw prices slashed across all Lightning trim levels, with the entry-level Pro receiving the biggest discount.
