CARS.COM — Sony released the first trailer for the new “Ghostbusters” reboot last week, and I had a chance to get up close with the new Ecto-1 that the new ghost-fighting team will be using to hunt the paranormal.
As director Paul Feig related to USA Today, having an updated version of the Ecto-1 was a priority. “Katie [Dippold] and I were like, ‘What would we be bummed not to have if we were Ghostbusters fans, what would we need to see in this movie. The top of the list was Ecto-1.”
The original “Ghostbusters” movie came out in 1984, and Bill Murray and company rolled around in a Miller-Meteor Futura hearse/ambulance body that was mounted on a 1959 Cadillac Fleetwood chassis. The new vehicle is a nod to that one; it’s a 1993 Cadillac hearse that has been modified for ghostbusting duty.
On top of the car is an assortment of tanks, lights and other equipment. My favorite touch is a gold ghost-shaped hood ornament — in case the giant ghost decals on the sides don’t give the Ecto-1’s intentions away. Dippold, one of the screenwriters for the movie, commented that “we could have had a crazy modern souped-up car, but we wanted to stick to the basics and this is four underdogs that don’t have a lot of money.”
