CARS.COM — You’d think that if an automaker were to design a blue-jeans-themed special edition of one of its models, it might be, say, a Jeep Wrangler. But Volkswagen is the fashion-forward one, it seams, with the 2016 Beetle Convertible Denim Special Edition — a perfect fit for those who like to drive by the seat of their pants.
According to VW, the limited-edition Beetle Denim is a tribute to the Beetle Jeans model from the 1970s. The denim concept is most readily displayed in the convertible cloth top, finished in dark blue with a new textured fabric that resembles your favorite pair of Levi’s — only it’s perfectly acceptable to drop these pants in public.

The motif continues in the cabin, with special light-blue-and-silver dash trim, jeans-inspired seat pockets complete with a small, red Beetle flag, and light-blue denim-style cloth seating surfaces with white piping and dark-blue leatherette accents. The convertible will be available in two denim colors: Pure White and Stonewashed Blue. The colors each will get half of the 2,000-unit production run (and both are inadvisable for actual jeans).
The Beetle Denim gets VW’s turbocharged 1.8-liter direct-injected four-cylinder engine, good for 170 horsepower and 184 pounds-feet of torque and mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Standard features include the MIB II infotainment system with a 5-inch touch-screen, Bluetooth connectivity and a backup camera.
The Beetle Denim starts at $26,815, including an $820 destination charge; that’s roughly $500 more than the base 1.8-liter S Beetle Convertible. VW spokesman Mark Gilles said the jeans-themed model should be rolling up in dealerships later this week.
