Child-safety seat manufacturer Dorel is recalling more than 59,000 of its Maxi-Cosi and Safety 1st rear-facing child seats over an issue relating to the lower anchor mechanism.
Affected models include certain model numbers of the Maxi-Cosi Coral XP, Maxi-Cosi Infant Base, Maxi-Cosi Mico Luxe+, Maxi-Cosi Mico XP, Maxi-Cosi Mico XP Max and the Safety 1st Onboard 35 SecureTech. The self-retracting lower anchor mechanism in the base of these seats may experience increased resistance, causing damage to the feature that is intended to place the mechanism in a fully locked position. Once damaged, the lower anchors in the base may not keep the child-seat secure in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
For the meantime, owners are advised to secure their child seat with the vehicle belt restraint system, per the existing instruction booklet and labels, until the issue has been remedied. Dorel will mail a replacement base to owners, if necessary, for free. Owners will be notified April 7, but those with further questions can call the manufacturer at 877-416-8111 or visit NHTSA’s website to check their car seat’s brand or model for other recalls and learn more.
