JLR’s Discovery Sport is closing in on a decade old and beset on all sides by competition — much of it from within its own brand. The Range Rover Velar and Evoque are similarly sized, offer the same turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and have prices starting within $10,000 or so. Ditto the Jaguar E-Pace and F-Pace. The Discovery Sport’s available third-row seat at least sets it apart, although it’s sized for children who maybe shouldn’t be left unattended that far from their parents in the front. To spice up the aging SUV for 2024, the Discovery Sport gets a big refresh — mostly of the interior.

… OK, really just the dash (and the steering wheel). An 11.4-inch curved-glass touchscreen now perches in the middle of the dashboard, gathering secondary functions from climate control to the audio system in one place and leaving an uncluttered void where buttons and knobs for those systems used to roam.

The clean look is attractive. Although we find physical controls for common functions to be less distracting, the brand notes that 90% of system functions are accessible within two taps of the home screen. We’re not sure how other automakers’ systems stack up by that metric, but it sure sounds good.

A stubby new shifter pulls more visual weight from the center console. The new steering wheel likewise trims down, packing the airbag into a tidier center section and floating audio, cruise and infotainment controls on two of its three spokes. Amazon Alexa, Android Auto and wireless Apple CarPlay are standard, so talking to the car might keep drivers from having to smudge fingerprints on that touchscreen at all. Outside, the SUV gets a new black grille featuring a hexagonal motif and new wheel options.

Aged but still looking good, the 2024 Discovery Sport wears its simplified dash design well. Ordering is open now, and pricing starts at $50,075 for the S variant and $54,275 for the Dynamic SE (all prices include a $1,175 destination charge).
