ChargePoint and GM to Open Up to 500 New EV Chargers by End of 2025

ChargePoint and GM are chipping in a little bit more to alleviate every electric vehicle driver’s biggest problem: “Where the heck am I going to charge this thing?” The two companies announced plans to install up to 500 new GM Energy-branded DC fast chargers, with the goal of having all of them ready for consumers to use by the end of 2025.

They’re not kidding about the “fast” part, either, with the announcement noting that many of these new chargers will use the ChargePoint Express Plus platform that enables charging speeds of up to 500 kilowatts. For reference, a 350-kW charger operating under ideal conditions can charge most EVs up to 80% in well under 30 minutes.

While the chargers are branded as “GM Energy,” they will be open for all EVs to use. These chargers will come equipped with ChargePoint’s Omni Port, which allows users with either Combined Charging System or North American Charging Standard plugs to use the charger without having to bring their own adapter. While many automakers are using the Tesla-style NACS plugs in the U.S. market going forward, installing these new chargers with Omni Port also ensures they’ll be easy to use with most older non-Tesla EVs for years to come. (Sorry, Nissan Leaf owners with CHAdeMO ports, you’ll still need an adapter.)

While a recent J.D. Power study showed that public satisfaction with the public EV charging infrastructure is improving, companies simply haven’t been adding enough chargers to keep up with increasing EV sales. While 500 new chargers being added nationwide won’t singlehandedly solve that, it’s just one of several recently announced expansions of public fast-charging networks. Marque-specific networks like Rivian’s and Tesla’s have opened up to other EVs, and this GM Energy announcement adds to the significant list of other recently announced automaker partnerships to build out thousands of new chargers to try and meet demand.
