Baby Duramax Diesel Makes 277 hp, 460 Torque in Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra
Details are trickling in on GM’s hotly anticipated baby Duramax diesel, a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder for light-duty Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks. Up until now, we’ve been waiting for power, pricing, hauling and fuel economy specs for the new engine (pretty much everything), and GM recently confirmed horsepower and torque numbers along with pricing and availability.
The turbocharged 3.0-liter Duramax diesel six-cylinder makes an SAE International-certified 277 horsepower and 460 pounds-feet of torque, which is more than Ford’s 3.0-liter V-6 that makes . Even so, peak numbers on their own don’t mean everything, so we’d love to see the torque curve of this new engine, total weight plus hauling and fuel economy specs, though if there’s one area where the current engine lineup in the Silverado and Sierra doesn’t disappoint, it’s in .
The 3.0-liter Duramax diesel pairs exclusively with the 10-speed automatic transmission and an auto stop-start system. What we now know is that this combo will be optional in the Silverado LT, RST, LTZ and High Country trim levels, and all GMC Sierra trims except the base Sierra. How much will the six-cylinder Duramax cost? As costly as the powerhouse, optional 6.2-liter V-8, or $2,495 over the 5.3-liter V-8 and $3,890 more than the turbocharged 2.7-liter gas four-cylinder, though GM says it’s the most-affordable light-duty diesel offering.
