Subcompact-car shoppers have another model to put on their radar, but they’ll have to wait awhile for it. Mazda just announced that its smallest car in the U.S., the Mazda2, is being completely redesigned and will go on sale, globally, this fall. There was no announcement on a timeframe for U.S. sales, but because it’s being released as a 2016 model year, it can’t be sold here until the 2015 calendar year.

This is the first time the Mazda2 (named Demio in other markets) has received a redesign since its introduction in the States as a 2011 model. As shown in these photos, the new 2 shares design styling with the updated Mazda3 compact sedan and hatchback as well as the CX-5 compact crossover. It also sports a new interior with the company’s latest multimedia system, which we had mixed feelings about when reviewing the Mazda3.

It will pack a new 1.3-liter four-cylinder engine that promises extreme fuel economy but minimal power numbers: 83 horsepower and 83 pounds-feet of torque. It could be rated as the most efficient nonhybrid on the market when its final numbers are released.
