90,000 Mitsubishi Outlander, Outlander Plug-in Hybrid SUVs Recalled Over Backup Cameras

In a busy week for big recalls, Mitsubishi’s latest safety guidance for its gas-only and plug-in hybrid Outlanders figures on the low end, but nearly 90,000 SUVs is still nearly 90,000 SUVs, and the issue is an important one: inoperative backup cameras.

Affected models include model-year 2022-23 Outlanders and model-year 2023 Outlander Plug-in Hybrids. Due to a software error in the infotainment system, the federally mandated backup camera rearview image may not appear on the display. A failed backup camera can reduce the driver’s view and increase the risk of a crash or injury.

To resolve the issue, dealers will update the infotainment system software for free. Mitsubishi will begin notifying owners June 20, but those with further questions can call the automaker at 888-648-7820 (the number for this recall is SR-23-001), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or visit its website to check their vehicle identification number and learn more.
