2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid: A Less Extreme Approach to Electrification

Subaru’s lifted Impreza, the Crosstrek compact SUV, has been without a hybrid variant since the latest generation debuted for the 2024 model year. Now, the brand of flat engines, all-wheel drive and dogs is rectifying that omission with the 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid.

Using Subaru’s next-generation hybrid tech, the 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid utilizes a 2.5-liter flat-four engine and two electric motors, one acting as a motor-generator and one helping to drive the wheels. With a combined 194 horsepower, the combination bests the non-hybrid 2.5-liter also available in the Crosstrek by 12 hp. A continuously variable automatic transmission and AWD are standard.
Change in Plans
The new Crosstrek Hybrid employs a much smaller battery than the last-generation vehicle did. With just 1.1 kilowatt-hours versus the old one’s 8.8 kWh, the 2026 model is unlikely to be capable of any meaningful electric-only range. (Its predecessor could only manage 17 miles.) Still, the additional power and the smaller battery’s light weight give the hybrid a good chance of being the peppiest Crosstrek.
This is similar to the approach Subaru’s frequent corporate collaborator Toyota takes with the RAV4, in which the hybrid is not only more efficient but slightly more powerful and quicker, too. RAV4 buyers also pay a smaller premium for the hybrid than what Subaru demanded for the old plug-in Crosstrek. Without hybrid assistance, the 2.5-liter Crosstrek returns an EPA-rated 29 mpg combined. If Subaru sees a fuel-economy benefit similar to what Toyota gets out of the RAV4 Hybrid, expect a combined rating in the high 30-mpg range.
More Trim Diversity

Subaru’s hybrid strategy will shift in another meaningful way. The company says it will offer multiple trim levels of the Crosstrek Hybrid; previously, the gas-electric powertrain was only available in a single trim. Subaru’s announcement of the new SUV repeatedly references available premium features, such as a panoramic moonroof, 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and larger touchscreen. In addition, Emergency Stop Assist, which will stop the Crosstrek, turn on the hazard lights, unlock the doors and call emergency services in the event the driver is unresponsive, will be a new standard safety feature.
