All-new for 2024, the Toyota Grand Highlander gains a new base trim level for the 2025 model year, as well as a stylish Nightshade Edition that brings black exterior accents to the mid-size three-row SUV. While prices for most trim levels creep up a few hundred dollars over the outgoing model, the new LE trim drops the nameplate’s base price from $44,770 to $42,310 (all prices include $1,450 destination fee).

Powertrain Specs and MPG

The Grand Highlander is available with three powertrains. Gas-only variants get a 265-horsepower, turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that nets 310 pounds-feet of torque and is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The Grand Highlander Hybrid uses a normally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder and an electric motor; it’s good for a total of 245 hp and drives the wheels through a continuously variable automatic transmission. The Hybrid Max pairs the turbocharged 2.4-liter with two electric motors to produce a combined 362 hp and 400 pounds-feet; it uses a six-speed automatic.

Front-wheel drive is standard on the Grand Highlander; all-wheel drive is available for $1,600 but is standard on the gas-only Platinum and every hybrid trim except the XLE. Toyota says that front-drive gas models return the same EPA-rated 21/28/24 mpg city/highway/combined as the 2024 model (official EPA ratings for the 2025 model are not yet available); AWD variants thereof are rated at 21/27/23 mpg except the Limited and Platinum, which slip to 20/26/22 mpg. The Grand Highlander Hybrid gets 37/34/36 mpg with FWD and 36/32/34 mpg with AWD except the Limited, which is rated at 35/31/33 mpg. The Hybrid Max returns 26/27/27 mpg.

Interior features include cloth seats, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, second-row bench seat (for eight-passenger seating), tri-zone automatic climate control, six speakers and a 12.3-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Other than the powertrain, trim-level content is the same across gas and hybrid Grand Highlanders.

The XLE gains synthetic leather upholstery, an upgraded driver’s seat and power-adjustable front-passenger seat, heated front seats, second-row captain’s chairs, window shades, wireless phone charging and Digital Key, which allows the driver to use a paired smartphone as the vehicle key.

Stepping up to the Limited adds 20-inch wheels, LED daytime running lights and foglamps, a hands-free power liftgate, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and front and rear parking sensors with automatic braking. Cabin upgrades include ventilated front seats, heated second-row seats, a heated steering wheel, ambient lighting and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.

Available only on the Grand Highlander Hybrid, the Nightshade Edition is equipped similarly to the Limited but features black 20-inch wheels and exterior trim. Inside, it gets black leather upholstery and matte-gray trim.

The Platinum trim level caps the lineup with a panoramic moonroof, heated and ventilated front and second-row seats, and a rearview camera mirror. The Platinum also features a few tech upgrades, including a head-up display, 360-degree camera system and traffic-jam assist, which can drive the vehicle at speeds below 25 mph on limited-access highways.
