2025 Toyota Crown: New Nightshade, More Standard Luxury

With the Crown entering just its third year on the U.S. market, Toyota is fine-tuning the formula for its full-size sedan/mid-size crossover/hatchback. It’s still available exclusively as an all-wheel-drive hybrid, but for the 2025 model year, the Crown follows the lead of other Toyotas in offering a Nightshade trim level.

Additionally, all trim levels now boast heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats and a heated steering wheel. The range-topping Platinum trim adds a head-up display, rear-wheel steering, power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel and hands-free power trunk.

Powertrain Specs and MPG
Having paved the way for the 2025 Camry’s all-hybrid powertrain lineup, the Crown is available with a choice of gas-electric powertrains. The setup found in the XLE, Limited and Nightshade combines a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with a continuously variable automatic transmission and two electric motors to generate a total of 236 horsepower. EPA fuel-economy ratings aren’t available for the 2025 Crown yet, but they shouldn’t change from 2024, when the system was EPA-rated at 42/41/41 mpg city/highway/combined.
The Platinum is fitted with a Hybrid Max system, which uses a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder and two electric motors to make a combined 340 hp and 400 pounds-feet of torque. Instead of the CVT, the Platinum’s Max powertrain uses a six-speed automatic. The extra power takes a toll in fuel economy, though, with the Crown Platinum earning an EPA-rated 29/32/30 mpg for 2024.

Trim Levels and Safety Equipment
Every 2025 Toyota Crown includes Toyota’s Safety Sense 3.0 as standard equipment. The suite of advanced driver-assist features includes forward collision warning with pedestrian detection and automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning and steering assist, lane-centering steering, automatic high beams and road-sign recognition. Blind spot monitors and rear cross-traffic alert aren’t bundled with the safety suite but are also standard.
The XLE rides on 19-inch wheels and features LED exterior lighting and keyless entry and start. Inside, it gets heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, dual-zone automatic climate control, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, a 12.3-inch touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, wireless phone charging and six speakers.
The Limited features upgraded LED headlights, a fixed panoramic glass roof, rain-sensing windshield wipers and an 11-speaker JBL sound system. Its safety suite adds front and rear parking sensors with automatic emergency braking.
The Nightshade is more or less an appearance package based on the Limited trim, with matte-black 21-inch wheels, black exterior trim and dark badging. It’s only available in black or a dark blue-gray that Toyota calls Storm Cloud.
At the top of the line sits the Platinum trim level. Its safety roster is enhanced with a head-up display, lane change assist, front cross-traffic alert, traffic jam assist, 360-degree parking camera and parking assist. The Platinum rides on 21-inch wheels and features a hands-free power trunk with kick sensor and the Digital Key, which allows the driver to use their phone as a key. Two-tone paint is available exclusively on the Platinum and pairs a black hood, roof and trunk with a red, white, dark gray or bronze body.
