A body-on-frame holdout in a world of carlike SUVs, the Toyota 4Runner is a resolute traditionalist. It’s little surprise, then, that this high-riding resistor of the tides of change rolls into the 2024 model year with nothing new but a couple of new color choices. To its buyers, the 4Runner is good enough just the way it is.

Powertrain Specs and MPG
All 2024 4Runners are powered by a 270-horsepower, 4.0-liter V-6 engine making 278 pounds-feet of torque and backed by a five-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and part-time four-wheel drive is available on most trims, while the Limited uses a full-time 4WD system. Though official 2024 figures are not yet available, the 2023 4Runner is rated by the EPA at 16/19/17 mpg city/highway/combined across all variants.
Standard Safety Tech
Toyota’s Safety Sense P suite of driver-assist features is standard on every 2024 Toyota 4Runner. It bundles forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control and lane departure alert. Blind spot monitors and rear cross-traffic alert are also standard across the lineup. The Limited trim adds front and rear parking sensors and a 360-degree camera system to keep a close eye on surroundings while parking or maneuvering in tight off-road scenarios.
Pricing and Trim Levels
The 2024 4Runner will be on sale soon. On the SR5, SR5 Premium and TRD Sport trims, the part-time 4WD system is a $1,875 option; the Limited’s full-time 4WD system is a $2,035 upcharge. Full pricing for the 2024 Toyota 4Runner (including $1,395 destination fee) is as follows:
- SR5: $41,850

Standard equipment on the SR5 trim includes 17-inch wheels, underbody skid plates, keyless entry and starting, a power driver’s seat, power rear window — the one in the hatch, another way in which the 4Runner is unique among modern SUVs — and an 8-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Moving up to the SR5 Premium adds navigation, synthetic leather, heated front seats and a power passenger seat.
The TRD Sport is Toyota’s effort at injecting some on-road performance into its trail hopper. It rides on a unique suspension tuned more for pavement than rocks and adds 20-inch wheels and a hood scoop to the SR5’s equipment.
Getting back to the 4Runner’s primary mission, the TRD Off-Road and Off-Road Premium variants add an electronic locking rear differential and additional drive modes for various off-road surfaces. Up one more trim level is the TRD Pro, which builds on that with a burlier off-road suspension, unique wheels and tires, and a front skidplate with a bold TRD logo stamped into it. Inside, the TRD Pro gets a 15-speaker JBL sound system.
The Limited is the most luxurious 4Runner. It boasts 20-inch wheels, chrome exterior trim, a power moonroof and, when equipped with 4WD, a locking center differential. Inside, it packs real leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control and ventilated front seats.

Versus the Competition
With its old-school construction and focus on off-road capability, the 4Runner has few natural predators, which are mostly limited to vehicles with removable roofs and doors. The four-door 2024 Jeep Wrangler starts at $37,990, and the four-door 2024 Ford Bronco starts at $41,765.
