Once the stand-alone mongrel in an already heretic lineup, the E-Hybrid is taking over as the predominant Porsche Cayenne variant. In a simpler time, the hierarchy advanced from base Cayenne to Cayenne S to Cayenne Turbo; with the announcement of the Cayenne S E-Hybrid, the electrified luxury SUV now boasts its own complete lineup of base, S and Turbo trims and powertrains.
Available in both regular SUV and swept-roof “coupe” body styles, the 2024 Cayenne S E-Hybrid is powered by a version of the turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 engine found in the base E-Hybrid. In the S, the V-6 makes 348 horsepower and 368 pounds-feet of torque, increases of 48 hp and 59 pounds-feet, respectively, over the base hybrid. The electric motor contributes the same 174 hp and 339 pounds-feet, bumping total system output to 512 hp and 553 pounds-feet, 49 hp and 74 pounds-feet more than the base powertrain.
Those figures also exceed the output of the gas-powered Cayenne S and its twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8, which makes 468 hp and 442 pounds-feet. Porsche says the S E-Hybrid can accelerate from 0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds and run the quarter-mile in 13 seconds flat; that’s the same 0-60 time Porsche claims for the Cayenne S with the Sport Chrono Package and a tenth of a second quicker in the quarter-mile despite being 437 pounds heavier than the gas-engined Cayenne S.
The electrified half of the Cayenne S E-Hybrid’s powertrain is energized by a 25.9-kilowatt-hour battery pack. For 2024, Porsche increased the battery capacity of all hybrid Cayennes, which previously packed 17.9 kWh. The company says the 11-kilowatt onboard charger in the 2024 S E-Hybrid can fully charge the pack in about 2.5 hours on a standard Level 2 charger. The EPA hasn’t tested any Cayenne hybrids with the larger battery yet, but we expect an electric-only range comfortably above the 2023 model’s 15 miles.
Porsche is taking orders for the 2024 Cayenne S E-Hybrid now, with deliveries set to start in the spring of 2024. Pricing, including $1650 for delivery, will start at $100,750 for the SUV and $105,650 for the coupe.
