In our first in-person encounter with the redesigned and reinvigorated Mitsubishi Outlander, we proclaimed it had gone “from outcast to outstanding.” That was in 2022. For the 2024 model year, Mitsubishi keeps the momentum going by adding a new Platinum Edition to both the regular gas-powered Outlander and the plug-in hybrid, as well as expanding the existing Black Edition to the PHEV.

What’s New?

Mitsubishi hasn’t released pricing for the Platinum Edition yet, but we expect it to sit at the top of the lineup. It will wear Black Diamond paint with a silver roof and satin-finish hood emblem, and silver trim will set off a light-gray interior.

The SEL Black Edition, previously limited to the gas-only Outlander, will now be available on the PHEV, as well. Based on the SE or SEL trim levels, the Outlander Black Edition features black 20-inch wheels; black skid plates front and rear; and black mirror housings, badges and door handles. A two-tone roof is available. SEL Black Editions also get black leather seating, black-chrome window trim and black roof rails, as well as upgraded exterior lighting.

Regardless of trim level, all 2024 Outlanders also come with free scheduled maintenance for the first two years or 30,000 miles, whichever comes first. This includes three oil and filter changes, three tire rotations and one cabin air filter replacement.

Powertrain Specs, MPG and Range

Non-hybrid Outlanders are powered by a 181-horsepower, 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine mated to a continuously variable automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is a $1,800 option. With front-drive, the Outlander is rated by the EPA at 24/31/27 mpg city/highway/combined; AWD models get 24/30/26.

The Outlander PHEV comes with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine and a pair of electric motors that make a combined 248 hp; AWD is standard. Mitsubishi says it’s rated to travel up to 38 miles on electricity alone and gets a total of 420 miles of driving range.

Versus the Competition

Much of the credit for the newest Outlander’s improvement is due to its underpinnings, which are shared with the Nissan Rogue. For the 2023 model, the Rogue’s pricing starts at $29,245 (model-year 2024 pricing is not yet available). Other heavy hitters in this segment include model-year 2024 versions of the Ford Escape ($30,840), Honda CR-V ($30,825), Hyundai Tucson ($28,585) and Toyota RAV4 ($29,825).
