To achieve the agency’s highest safety rating, a vehicle must first earn its highest possible rating of good in a round of six demanding crash tests. These include the driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, original side and moderate overlap front evaluations, along with testing to determine the vehicle’s roof strength and the effectiveness of its head restraints. IIHS also determines the performance of a vehicle’s standard and optional (if available) headlights, which must be deemed good or acceptable. In the case of both the G80 and Electrified G80, each sedan’s LED projector headlights registered an acceptable rating.
IIHS also tests the performance of active driver aids, specifically automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection during both daytime and nighttime scenarios. Both sedans earned the highest superior rating in daytime tests and an advanced rating for the nighttime tests.
About the only notable demerit was the Electrified G80’s rating of marginal (one step above the lowest score of poor) for the ease of use of its Latch child-seat anchors. Interestingly, the gas-fed G80 registered a score of acceptable in the same test.
As Hyundai’s luxury brand, Genesis now has seven vehicles that have Top Safety Pick+ awards from model-years 2023 and 2024. Included along with the gas and all-electric G80s are the full-size G90 sedan, GV60 electric compact SUV, GV70 and Electrified GV70 compact SUVs, and GV80 mid-size SUV.
The 2024 Genesis G80 has a starting price of around $55,000 (prices include destination) and comes standard with rear-wheel drive; all-wheel drive is optional. The sedan has a choice of two powertrains: a 300-horsepower, turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder or twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6 that produces 375 hp. The approximately $81,000 2024 Electrified G80 has not yet been rated by the EPA, but its 2023 equivalent had an EPA-rated maximum driving range of 282 miles. The Electrified G80 comes standard with AWD and has dual electric motors that produce a total of 365 hp.
