2024 BMW 2 Series Carries Over Mostly Unchanged, Starts at $39,395

Despite sharing a name, the BMW 2 Series coupe and 2 Series Gran Coupe are hardly related. The coupe is a traditional BMW: rear-wheel drive with an available M variant for sports-coupe purist buyers. The Gran Coupe, a compact sedan with a sleek roofline, is based on a front-drive architecture it shares with other models under the automaker’s umbrella. Nevertheless, their similar size means that BMW pedals both cars under the same nameplate. For 2024, pricing for the Gran Coupe starts at $39,395; the coupe at $39,795 (all prices include $995 destination charge).

What’s New?

Little changes for model-year 2024 with either 2 Series body style. While the Gran Coupe still offers three different interior trims with ambient lighting, that’s one fewer choice than buyers had in 2023. And the high-performance M2 coupe will be available in two new colors later in the year: Frozen Pure Grey Metallic and Frozen Portimao Blue II Metallic.

Powertrain Specs and MPG

The 2 Series Gran Coupe is powered by a choice of turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engines, both backed by eight-speed automatic transmissions. With 228 horsepower and 258 pounds-feet of torque, the 228i is available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive (denoted by BMW as xDrive) for an additional $2,000. The M235i Gran Coupe, with 302 hp and 332 pounds-feet of torque, is only offered with AWD. The EPA rates the 228i Gran Coupe at 24/34/28 mpg city/highway/combined, the 228i xDrive at 23/33/27 mpg and the M235i at 24/33/27 mpg.

A turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder is also the base engine in the 2 Series coupe. In the 230i, it makes 255 hp and 295 pounds-feet of torque. An eight-speed automatic is also standard in the coupe, which is available with RWD or AWD for an additional $2,000. The M240i swaps out the four-cylinder for a turbo 3.0-liter inline-six making 382 hp and 369 pounds-feet of torque. The rear-drive 230i coupe is the mileage champ of the 2 Series line, hitting an EPA-estimated 26/35/30 mpg. The 230i xDrive is rated at 25/33/28 mpg, the M240i xDrive at 23/32/26 mpg and the M240i at 22/32/26 mpg.

The performance halo of the 2 Series family, the M2 boasts a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six cranking out 453 hp and 406 pounds-feet of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is standard; an eight-speed automatic is optional for no extra charge. The M2 is EPA-rated at 16/24/19 mpg with the manual and 16/23/19 mpg with the automatic.

Standard and Optional Safety Features

Both the 2 Series coupe and Gran Coupe feature forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitors, lane departure warning, and front and rear parking sensors as standard equipment. Adaptive cruise control and adaptive headlights are available on both, while the regular coupe and the M2 also offer a head-up display, 360-degree camera system and automated parking.
