The Countryman’s exterior styling is carried over from the 2022 model year, so the major update for the SUV is the introduction of a new special edition. Based on the Iconic Trim, the Untamed Edition is available on the Cooper S and Cooper SE plug-in hybrid variants and comes with an exclusive hue called Momentum Grey metallic, blue stripes on the doors, a set of two-tone 18-inch wheels and black mirror caps. Inside, the special-edition variant is finished in Highland Green with blue and green stitching, and “Untamed” logos, mountain-range graphics and illuminated surfaces are added throughout the cabin.

The remaining updates for 2023 include the spare tire now only being available as an option and the Driver Assistance Package adding park assist and a head-up display; gone from the package is adaptive cruise control. The rest of the Countryman’s interior is carried over from 2022, with the cabin embracing typical Mini design cues including a standard 6.5-inch infotainment system embedded in large circular housing; a bigger 8.8-inch infotainment screen with navigation and Apple CarPlay capability is available.

The base powerplant is a 134-horsepower, turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine; the Cooper S comes with a 189-hp, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder; and stepping up to the John Cooper Works version gets you a 301-hp, turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder. Meanwhile, the Cooper SE PHEV gets a turbo 1.5-liter three-cylinder paired with a rear-mounted 87-hp electric motor to produce a combined system output of 221 hp. Front-wheel drive is standard on the Cooper and Cooper S, with all-wheel drive optional. The Cooper SE PHEV and John Cooper Works variants get AWD standard. FWD models come equipped with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, and AWD equipped models get an eight-speed automatic.
