2022 Toyota Tundra Named IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus

The 2022 Toyota Tundra is the first and only pickup truck of any size to be named a 2022 Top Safety Pick Plus, the highest accolade given to a vehicle by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The rating only applies to the four-door crew-cab model, however, as the extended-cab version has not yet been fully evaluated. Fully redesigned for the 2022 model year, the Tundra earned significantly improved scores in multiple crashworthiness tests and headlight evaluations compared to the previous-generation model.

To earn either a Top Safety Pick Plus or Top Safety Pick designation, a vehicle must earn a score of good in six crashworthiness evaluations: driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, original side, roof strength and head restraint tests. The last-gen Tundra earned an acceptable rating in the roof strength evaluation, a marginal rating in the driver-side small overlap front test and a poor rating in the passenger-side small overlap front test.
In addition to the crashworthiness tests, a vehicle must also earn either a good or acceptable rating for all of its available headlights to be named a Top Safety Pick Plus. The previous Tundra could only manage a marginal rating for its headlights. The lesser Top Safety Pick designation requires only that one available set of headlights be rated acceptable or good.

The last requirement for both Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick Plus is that the vehicle offers a front crash prevention system that earns advanced or superior ratings in both vehicle-to-vehicle and daylight vehicle-to-pedestrian crash prevention tests. While not part of the 2022 criteria, the 2022 Tundra’s front crash prevention system also earned a superior rating in the night vehicle-to-pedestrian crash prevention test.

No other pickup truck of any size — IIHS divides pickup trucks into “Large” and “Small” categories — has earned a Top Safety Pick Plus designation, but three have been named Top Safety Picks. Among large pickups, the award goes to the crew-cab 2022 Ram 1500 and both the crew-cab and extended-cab 2022 Ford F-150, while the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz is the only winner among small pickups.
