2020 Toyota Tacoma One of Only Three Trucks to Get IIHS Safety Award

Pickup trucks have , but you can add the 2020 Toyota Tacoma crew cab to the list of ones that don’t — when properly equipped. The lightly updated 2020 Toyota Tacoma double cab (aka crew cab) crash-tests well, but not perfectly, in crashworthiness and safety ratings from IIHS, earning the organization’s Top Safety Pick award.

The Tacoma fell one award short of IIHS’ highest rating, Top Safety Pick Plus, because of an acceptable rating in the passenger-side small overlap crash test (IIHS rates on a scale of good, acceptable, marginal or poor).

Even so, the Tacoma is one of only three pickups of any size IIHS awards a Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick Plus. The 2019 Honda Ridgeline is another mid-size pickup to earn a similar award among 2019 models of the Ford Ranger, Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon and Nissan Frontier; the Jeep Gladiator has not been tested as of this writing. The 2019-20 Ram 1500 crew cab earns a Top Safety Pick Plus designation.

For 2020, the Tacoma received a larger suite of standard safety features, called Toyota Safety Sense P, that includes a forward collision warning system with autonomous braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure alert and automatic high beams. While those features are standard, the headlights that scored the highest in IIHS tests and contributed to its Top Safety Pick are not. The Tacoma’s standard halogen projector headlights on the SR, SR5, TRD Sport and TRD Off-Road trims scored only a marginal rating, while the available LED lights — optional on the TRD Off-Road and TRD Sport and standard on the TRD Pro and TRD Limited — scored the highest rating of good.
