Toyota has updated the name for one of its smallest vehicles, the Yaris iA sedan — now simply the Yaris sedan, a name that promises to be much more understandable for a lot of consumers. The 2019 Yaris sedan is basically a refresh of the Yaris iA — a separate vehicle in sedan form from the Yaris hatchback.
If you didn’t like the way the twin openings on the lower bumper looked, well, that didn’t change for the new model year, but there is some more chrome trim on the bottom and a honeycomb insert to jazz it up. The headlights are the same shape as before, but there’s a bit more intricacy with the bezels.
There’s also more going on inside the car, which we liked before — it mixed interesting design with some textures that were upscale for an affordable subcompact car — thanks to there now being three trim levels (L, LE and XLE) instead of the one-size-fits-all of the old Yaris iA.
The model in this video is an XLE, and it gets some features that weren’t available on the Yaris iA, such as leatherette (vinyl) seats, single-zone automatic climate control and rain-sensing windshield wipers. A 7-inch infotainment screen is standard; a backup camera is now standard as required by law; and also standard now is a low-speed forward collision warning system with automatic emergency braking.
Unfortunately, higher-speed automatic emergency braking isn’t available, nor are Apple CarPlay, Android Auto or a moonroof. Fortunately, the Yaris is still based on the Mazda2, which should make it a nimble and fun to drive car. We should have more information closer to the Yaris sedan’s on-sale date sometime in the fall of 2018.
