The Lexus UX earned top marks in all crashworthiness tests by IIHS, which have toughened for 2019 with the added requirement for Top Safety Pick of an acceptable or good score (out of good, acceptable, marginal or poor) in IIHS’ new passenger-side small-overlap frontal crash test.
The UX also got the top score of superior (out of superior, advanced, basic or none) for its standard forward collision warning system with automatic emergency braking. The system avoided frontal collisions from both 12 mph and 25 mph in IIHS testing.
Top Safety Pick is the lesser of two awards given by IIHS. The perky little UX missed out on the agency’s top award, Top Safety Pick Plus, because even the best of its two available headlight systems fell short of a good score, which is required for the Plus award. Its optional adaptive LED headlights with automatic high beams scored a notch lower (acceptable), which qualified for a Top Safety Pick. But the standard LED lights with automatic high beams were rated poor, largely due to excessive low-beam glare.

Among luxury-brand rivals, the UX’s rating ties the 2019 BMW X2 and beats the 2019 BMW X1, but it’s lower than the 2019 Volvo XC40, which earned a Top Safety Pick Plus when equipped with the best of its available headlight systems.
