2018 Mercedes-AMG GLA45 in Kryptonite Green: Kryptonite to Good Taste

CARS.COM — Unless you’re Lex Luthor, the 2018 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLA45 is probably not the car to take to see Superman in the newly released “Justice League” movie, given the powerful hatchback’s Kryptonite Green Metallic exterior.

The color, as it turned out, was also my Kryptonite because I really enjoyed driving the turbocharged, 375-horsepower hatchback during Cars.com’s test — but wanted to avoid being near it because, well, look at it. The color is definitely a polarizing option. Some editors adored it, while others, including myself, had trouble getting past the ostentatious add-on.

The flashy green paint, multispoke wheels and optional spoiler make this $71,000 Mercedes-AMG look like a generic tuner car seen in the background of a “Fast and Furious” movie. People gave me the “WTF” face and even took pictures of the weirdly shaped little green thingamabob while stopped at intersections.

It drives anything but generically, however, and is a thrill ride of a hatchback (though Mercedes calls it an SUV) that hits 60 mph in 4.3 seconds and has the rewarding drive of a proper AMG — especially loaded with the various performance upgrades on our test car that rocketed the price to more than $70,000.

The AMG GLA45 starts at $51,595 with destination, and ours added (among other features) 20-inch AMG wheels for $850, the AMG Performance Exhaust System for $650, AMG Performance Seats for $2,250, AMG Dynamic Plus Package and AMG Aerodynamics Package for $1,950, which is where that large rear spoiler is included.

And the cost of the paint? Kryptonite Green Metallic is also an add-on, adding $720 to the AMG GLA45.
